CHAPTER 22

“Gloria? Are you ok? Should we call the doctor?”

Blink.

“Gloria? Thank God you’re awake. What happened?”

“Derek?” Her voice was as throaty as a frog.

“Shh. Are you ok? Did you pass out?”

She shook her head, but the small movement made the entire room spin.

“I’m going to call you an ambulance.”

She grabbed his wrist. “No.”

“No?” When in the past decade had she seen eyes that kind before? That caring?

“No, I’m all right.” She held onto his arm and sat up to prove she was ok. The last thing she needed to pay for was a trip to the ER on top of all of Kitty’s regular medical bills.

He knelt beside her, supporting her with his hand behind her back. “What happened?”

“It was nothing.”

“Is it blood sugar? Are you diabetic? Do you think it might have been a stroke? Do you have heart problems?”

She let out a chuckle. Just how old did he think she was?

“I’m fine. I just tripped.”

He frowned, his disbelief clearly etched into his features.

“It was that man,” she finally told him. “Bowman’s father. He came in here and ...”

“What?” Derek was already on his feet. “Which way did they go? Where are they now?” Then he knelt beside her again. “Wait, what exactly happened? How bad was it?”

She gave her best attempt at a shrug. She thought she was trying to convince him, but maybe it was her own mind that needed to believe she was safe, that there really was nothing to worry about.

“I’m fine,” she insisted. “He didn’t even touch me.” At least, not that she remembered. “I got startled, and I tripped. That’s all.”

“And he didn’t stick around to see if you were all right?”

She sighed. Apparently, she’d have to tell a little bit more of the truth to convince Derek to stop worrying. “Well, he was upset because Bowman accepted Jesus into his heart today, so he came to confront me about it.”

“And he knocked you over and then left?”

“It wasn’t like that.”

She glanced at his face, at the stark anger in his eyes.

“Please, don’t worry about me. Just help me up, and then I better get myself home.”

He wrapped an arm around her waist. Her first thought was she was glad he wasn’t wearing that sweaty T-shirt he had on Monday.

“Come on. Let’s get you to your feet, and then you’re coming with me.”

“That really isn’t necessary. I need to go home and check on my daughter.”

“I saw her leave with Ricky. I’m sure they’re fine.”

“Not Susannah. I’m talking about her sister, Kitty.” Had Susannah told Derek about her? Did he even know she had another daughter?

If he was surprised, he didn’t show it. “Don’t worry about that. Come on. I’m taking you to the doctor. We need to make sure you don’t have any serious injuries.”

“It was just a little fall. I’m fine,” she insisted.

“You were passed out when I found you. You know that, don’t you?”

Gloria was on her feet now and turned to stare at him. “Really?”

He nodded. “Now, come on.
